About Picked by Ear
Music gear guides for people starting out or upgrading, built from what owners say after the box is open.

Hi, I'm Ellis Harper. I'm a home-studio musician and lifelong gear nerd. I read owner reviews and forum threads so you don't have to, then turn them into plain-English picks for people starting out or upgrading.
Why this site exists
Buying your first piece of gear is confusing. Spec sheets all look alike, and most "best of" lists repeat the product description. The useful information is buried in what owners write after a few weeks or a few years: the driver that keeps crashing, the neck that won't stay in tune, the mic that hears your fridge.
Picked by Ear digs that information out and organizes it, so you can see what holds up and who each product is really for.
Where our picks come from
Our guides are research-based, not bench-tested. We don't run lab measurements or keep a warehouse of gear. We work from owner ratings and reviews, published specs, and long-running discussions on Reddit and gear forums.
That's a real limit. The upside is time: a reviewer usually has a product for a few weeks, while owners have lived with it for years. A problem that keeps showing up in their reports weighs heavily in our picks.
How the work gets done
We use software, including AI tools, to collect and sort product data and owner reviews and to help draft. A human editor checks the sources and the claims and reviews every guide before it's published. Anything we can't back up gets cut.
Ellis Harper is the pen name the guides are published under, and the portrait on this page was made with AI. It isn't a photo of a real person.
The full process is on How we rank.
What we'll never do
- Accept payment, free products or placement deals from brands in exchange for coverage.
- Invent test results, credentials or statistics.
- Copy owner reviews wholesale. We summarize them and quote briefly.
- Leave out the downsides. Every pick says who should skip it.
How we make money
When you buy through one of our Amazon links, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Amazon sets the rate per product category, so within a guide it gives us no reason to favor one brand over another. Details are on our affiliate disclosure page.
